Powerful Vocabulary Instruction

Word Power

Kelly Ashley

Thursday 27th June 2019

9.15am – 3.30pm

Aimed at Primary phase Teachers and English Leads.

WORD POWER is a CPD programme designed to boost vocabulary instruction by developing teachers’ and pupils’ awareness of the power of words; practical, evidence-based strategies for amplifying word-learning in the primary classroom and helping pupils to notice and investigate language within a word-rich environment, through direct instruction of word learning strategies.

The programme of CPD is structured around the following ‘big ideas’:

  • Evidence and strategies for closing the ‘word gap’ in primary
  • Amplifying vocabulary within a language-rich environment
  • Direct  instruction of Power-Up strategies:

Building on phonic foundations (phonology, orthography, graphology)

Connecting the new with the known (connections, personal links)

Exploring word meaning (meaning in context, morphology, etymology)

  • Power Practise - How can we get new vocabulary to stick?
