Powerful Vocabulary Instruction
Tuesday 29th January 2019
9.15am – 3.30pm
Aimed at Primary phase Teachers and English Leads.
WORD POWER is a CPD programme designed to boost vocabulary instruction by developing teachers’ and pupils’ awareness of the power of words; practical, evidence-based strategies for amplifying word-learning in the primary classroom and helping pupils to notice and investigate language within a word-rich environment, through direct instruction of word learning strategies.
The programme of CPD is structured around the following ‘big ideas’:
The vocabulary challenge in primary – What does the research say works well?
Strategies for creating a language-rich environment – What ‘implicit’ messages are we sending about the importance of the words around us?
Investigating the ‘Power Up’ strategies for direct instruction – How can I view words using different ‘lenses’ to help power up knowledge when reading and writing?
