Course Leader:
Di Rogers: Health and Safety Advisor, Telford & Wrekin Council
  Di Rogers has a broad range of experience within schools and local authority. Di has been a teacher herself and is also a school Governor at a local Primary School in Shropshire. She is currently a Health & Safety Adviser for schools at Telford & Wrekin Council. She has worked for the local authority for over 24 years and has had a variety of roles during this time including leisure centre management, sports development, community facilities management, child protection and health and safety. She is also the authorities Educational Visits & Journeys co-ordinator.
Di is highly regarded by schools and establishes strong working relationships via a positive, realistic and effective approach to health and safety management.

Course Content  
This course is designed to provide health and safety advice and support to governors, to enable them to help the school comply with their legal responsibilities. 

Advice will include how the governing body can plan for the school to implement the health and safety policy, by setting objectives and performance standards and monitoring of the process.
By the end of the course, participants will:
  • have an overview of the legal responsibilities for health and safety
  • have an understanding of how health and safety law is enforced and what the Health and Safety Executive see as current priorities for schools
  • have an understanding of the role of the health and safety audit
  • have a clear understanding of the school’s and the governors’ responsibilities for health and safety
  • understand the importance of risk assessment
  • be able to set performance objectives
  • know what support is available to the school
